Lance of 8 Kingdom of Bretonnia knights for Warhammer: The Old World painted to Level 4 with individual heraldry, freehands and cobblestone scenic bases.
Private commission · Level 4 · Delivered July 2026. Kingdom of Bretonnia cavalry lance for Warhammer: The Old World featuring 8 knights with a full command group, painted to Level 4 standard with intricate individual heraldry, artistic freehands on shields, banners and barding, and medieval cobblestone scenic basing.
The project
This exclusive Warhammer: The Old World project captures the full chivalric splendour of the Kingdom of Bretonnia through a lance of 8 knights, each noble carrying a completely unique heraldic design. The commission was executed to our demanding Level 4 standard: a display-cabinet finish for army centrepieces where technical control, chromatic saturation and craftsmanship precision come first.
The core complexity lies in the freehand execution of classic Bretonnian iconography across shields, horse barding and banners. Rampant lions, dragons, pegasi, grails and fleurs-de-lis were painted with clean transitions and millimetric linework, layered over complex geometric patterns such as checkers and quartered fields. The main banner, crowned with the Grail and a razor-sharp chequered pattern, acts as the visual focal point of the whole unit.
Armour and helmets crowned with sculpted crests (winged dragons, pegasi and golden lions) received meticulous edge highlighting and controlled metal gradients, naturally separating polished steel from relic gold and bronze. Cloth folds and horse barding show smooth light-to-shadow transitions that reinforce volume and realism.
To frame this high-end piece in a coherent narrative, the squadron rides on unified scenic bases representing a royal cobbled road: grey stone slabs worked with micro-texture, bordered by alpine vegetation, static grass and red wildflowers that push the vibrant knightly palette even further.
Techniques used
- Advanced freehand & heraldic artistry: complex emblems (rampant lion, dragon, pegasus, Grail) hand-painted with their own shading and highlights.
- Geometrical patterning: precise chequered patterns on banner and barding with clean colour transitions.
- Smooth blending & cloth transitions: fluid gradients on horse caparisons and the command banner.
- Showcase metallics: advanced steel and ornamental gold work with precise edge highlighting and strong light/shadow contrast.
- Scenic cobblestone basing: medieval stone cobbles with embedded natural vegetation and contrasting flowers.
