Trio of 17th-century historical miniatures (English Civil War / Thirty Years' War) painted to Level 3: volumetric fabrics, leather texturing and advanced TMM.
Private commission · Level 3 · Delivered in February 2023. Trio of 17th-century historical miniatures painted to our Level 3 standard, featuring volumetric fabric highlights, textured leather effects, and precise metallic reflections on the officer's cuirass.
The project
This historical commission, delivered in February 2023, depicts three characteristic figures of the 17th-century European conflicts, compatible with systems such as Pike & Shotte. Executed at our Level 3 standard, the work demands absolute brush control to render realistic materials without the chromatic excesses typical of fantasy, prioritising historical accuracy and technical cleanliness.
Each figure was approached according to its specific materials. On the soldier to the left (grey uniform and fur cap), soft gradients define the folds of the cloth without artificial contrast, finished with subtle edge lining on eyelets and seams. The central officer showcases intensive work on his buff coat, with ochre glazes and sepia shadows simulating natural wear, contrasting sharply with the polished true metallic metal of his breastplate and the helmet held under his arm.
The halberdier on the right stands out for his emerald green doublet, where crisp zenithal lighting and lined pale trims visually separate every panel of the garment. All three faces received high-definition face painting, defining cheekbones, shadows under the hats and the period facial hair, giving the miniatures character and expression.
The set is unified by classic square bases, textured with dark earth and wet-meadow static grass, anchoring the figures in a traditional battlefield setting that never steals focus from the painting itself.
Featured techniques
- Historical Fabric Volumetry: soft, realistic lighting on matte fabrics (grey and green) respecting the natural drape of 17th-century garments.
- Leather & Buff Coat Texturing: earth tones, ochres and controlled shadows simulating the thickness and wear of leather on boots, straps and the officer's coat.
- Advanced TMM (True Metallic Metal): extreme highlights and shadows over real metallic pigments on cuirass and weapons to simulate polished steel.
- High-Definition Faces: focal work on the soldiers' faces, with expressions, directed gazes and period moustaches and goatees.
